Highlights of Abbott Fund
programs:
- Since 2001, Abbott Fund and the Government of Tanzania
have formed a unique public-private partnership to fight
HIV/AIDS. Abbott Fund has invested more than $40
million in one of the most comprehensive initiatives in
Africa to strengthen a country’s health care system; expand
access to HIV testing and treatment; and assist orphans and
vulnerable children impacted by HIV/AIDS. Results include
building a new outpatient center and clinical laboratories
at the country’s leading teaching hospital in Dar es Salaam;
expanding voluntary counseling and testing services at over
80 hospitals; clinics and rural health centers throughout
Tanzania; and training nearly 10,000 health care workers.
To date, more than 120,000 people have been tested and
counseled.
- Abbott Fund is helping advance the treatment of children
with HIV, and addressing the needs of orphans and vulnerable
children affected by HIV/AIDS in developing countries. Model
programs include pediatric clinics in Romania
and Malawi (press
release) as well as community programs
in Burkina Faso, India, and Tanzania. Since 2001, these
programs supported by Abbott Fund have helped more than
500,000 children and families.
- Together with the Baylor College of Medicine, Abbott
Fund supported the creation of a global network of health
professionals in the developing world, which collectively
care and treat 12,000 children living with HIV/AIDS.
- In partnership with Direct Relief International and the
Afghan Institute of Learning, Abbott Fund supports a
program to train midwives affiliated with three
clinics in Afghanistan. The program aims to
provide maternal and child care, as well as ensure safe and
healthy deliveries of babies.
- Abbott Fund supports Operation Smile, a not-for-profit
organization, which provides free and corrective surgeries
for children with facial deformities. Our grants have
enabled ongoing Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced
Cardiac Life Support training for health professionals in
developing countries. The goal of the program is to increase
survival rates of patients treated in emergencies and to
build medical capabilities in these countries.
- Abbott Fund contributed
millions of dollars to
international relief agencies to assist the victims of
natural disasters in the American Gulf Coast region, Mexico
and Central America, India, Pakistan and areas
affected by the Indian Ocean
tsunami.
- Abbott Fund contributed over $1 million to After School
Matters and Renaissance 2010 to create innovative after
school programming in science education for high school
students attending Chicago Public Schools.
- In partnership with HealthReach, a free healthcare clinic
for the medically underserved, Abbott Fund provided
funding for a bilingual medical interpretation training
program. The interpreters bridge cultural gaps, provide
advocacy for patients and manage intercultural
communication.
- Through a $1 million gift, Abbott Fund participated as
a Founder of Millennium Park, one of the most popular
destinations in Chicago. The 24.5 acre park transformed the
Chicago lakefront, providing both green space and a center
for art, music, architecture and landscape design.
- Abbott Fund matches gifts by Abbott employees in the
United States and Puerto Rico to eligible not-for-profit
organizations through the annual Abbott Employee Giving
Campaign. Abbott Fund also supports an
Employee Matching Grant Plan for
qualifying healthcare organizations, public broadcasting and
educational institutions in the United States.
