Siempre Unidos, founded in 1995, is the nation’s first self-help group and among the country’s first providers of effective, affordable anti-retroviral treatment. Comprised of medical providers, counselors, pastors, business leaders and community volunteers, the group offers comprehensive, compassionate care, social and spiritual services, community education and testing and employment opportunities for people living with HIV/AIDS. Because of social stigmas and employment discrimination in Honduras, it can be virtually impossible for those known to have HIV to find work. Siempre Unidos has established four micro industries – a jewelry workshop, a handicraft store, a cement block factory and a sewing workshop – so that those with HIV can support themselves and their families.
